Where the Raza Golf Experience Began

On August 25, 2023, we held our first 16-hour golf tournament. From the beginning, we wanted to bring golf and our culture together and make both part of the experience. So, we decided to have a live Mexican banda play right on the course for five hours. Some golfers were teeing off with the banda playing right next to them. Others were putting just a few yards away while the music played.

And of course, we couldn’t forget the tacos, the street fruit vendor, and the Hispanic vendors and small businesses we invited to come out and promote what they were building. It wasn’t about adding a few cultural touches around a golf tournament—it was about being intentional and making our culture part of the golf experience itself.

At the time, we had never seen or heard of another golf tournament with a live Mexican banda playing during the round, and we still haven’t found an earlier documented U.S. tournament that did. Could we have been the first? 🙂

That first tournament sold out within two weeks. We began getting requests to bring the experience to other cities and states, which eventually took us to Fresno. But taking what we do somewhere else isn’t always easy. We have to find a course willing to let us bring the full experience with us.

As the tournaments grew, so did the experience. We added more food, more businesses, and new activations, like a mechanical bull on the golf course. We’ve had people come from Las Vegas, Utah, Arizona, Washington, Colorado, Arkansas, and other parts of the country to attend. Seeing people willing to travel for our tournaments and return time and time again has been one of the most meaningful parts of this journey. We’ve even had some of these groups tell us that experiencing our tournaments and seeing what we are building inspired them to start their own golf brands and tournaments in their states. Honestly, hearing that has been incredibly humbling. What a compliment.

Today, we’re seeing our culture front and center at more Latino golf events, with banda, mariachi, grupos, food, music, and other parts of our culture becoming part of the golf experience. We love seeing this growth. It has been a privilege building these experiences.
